Check for yourself if you have a papilloma virus

Women were offered to do self-diagnosis of cervical cancer

Copper news

A smear from the mucous membrane of the cervix, which the women took independently using the digene HPV Test kit developed by the American company Qiagen, allowed for effective screening for the presence of human papillomavirus DNA in mucosal cells, reports New Scientist (DIY smear test works for cervical cancer). Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer in more than 90 percent of cases.

Fanhui Zhao (Fang-Hui Zhao) from the Chinese Peking Union Medical College in Beijing and his colleagues analyzed samples obtained from 13 thousand women. To do this, they conducted their HPV DNA testing, a traditional cytological smear test, as well as an analysis with acetic acid.

Self-testing for HPV, which allows you to detect early signs of cancer, turned out to be the most effective, although it gave some false positive results.

The results of the study are published in the Journal of the National Institute of Cancer.

"Self–testing for HPV can become the main method of screening women regardless of the availability of medical monitoring programs," Zhao believes.

85 percent of the incidence of cervical cancer occurs in poor countries due to the lack of screening and vaccination programs.
