Chewing and losing weight

Chewing gum as a remedy for obesity
Kirill Stasevich, Compulenta

Scientists have developed an oral method of delivering an appetite-suppressing hormone to the body.

People who want to lose weight usually face the problem of proper diet and diet. They should not eat when they want, and not what they want. But what would they say if all they had to do to get the desired effect was to regularly chew "magic" chewing gum?

The peptide hormone PYY is part of the biochemical system that controls energy exchange in our body and the feelings of hunger and appetite attached to it. When we eat, a lot of peptide YY is released into the bloodstream, and the more calories we have absorbed, the more of this hormone has entered the bloodstream. Previous studies have shown that in people suffering from obesity, the level of the YY peptide is lowered – both before and after meals. Intravenous injections of this hormone reduced appetite, as a result, people consumed fewer calories.

PYY (tyrosine-tyrosine peptide) is a short, 36 amino acid protein,
which is synthesized in the intestine after eating
and participates in the formation of a feeling of satiety – VM.

Unfortunately, taking peptide YY, for example, in the form of tablets is extremely ineffective. In the stomach, the hormone is destroyed, and the part of it that remains intact is absorbed with great difficulty by the intestinal wall. It would seem that there can be nothing better than injections. But a team of researchers from Syracuse University (USA) led by Robert Doyle managed to circumvent this obstacle. Earlier, Dr. Doyle and colleagues developed a method of oral (that is, through the oral cavity) delivery of insulin: for this, the hormone was sewn to vitamin B 12. The latter is easily absorbed by the intestinal epithelium and enters the bloodstream without problems, delivering the cargo to its destination. Now, as the authors write in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (Oral Delivery of the Appetite Suppressing Peptide hPYY(3-36) through the Vitamin B12 Uptake Pathway), the same has been done for peptide YY.

The principal part of the work, according to scientists, can be considered completed: the vitamin really allows you to inject a sufficient amount of peptide hormone through the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. The rest, as they say, is a matter of technique. Researchers want to make an analogue of anti-nicotine chewing gums that are chewed to quit smoking. With the help of a similar gum, only with the peptide YY, it would be possible to regularly make up for the lack of an appetite suppressing hormone after eating, and thus prevent chronic overeating.

Prepared based on the materials of Syracuse University: Chew gum, lose weight.
