Get tested for the papilloma virus? Easy!

Women will be able to independently conduct an HPV testABC Magazine
A group of researchers from Germany proved that women can quite cope with the human papillomavirus (HPV) test on their own.

The results of their study are published in the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology (Deleré et al., Cervicovaginal Self-Sampling Is a Reliable Method for Determining the Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes in Women Aged 20 to 30 Years).

In the course of the study, scientists compared the results of HPV tests conducted by women 20-30 years old independently using a special kit with the results obtained during examination by a gynecologist. The study involved 55 women with the established presence of the virus and 101 healthy women. Two tests currently available for self–administration have demonstrated a sufficiently high sensitivity – one showed the presence of HPV in 84 percent of cases, and the other in 91 percent. In addition, all the women who tried the test for self-conducting called this method simple and easy (12 points on a 100–point scale, where 0 is very simple, and 100 is very difficult).

"The high sensitivity of this test guarantees the detection of the virus in the majority of women infected with it," concluded study author Yvonne Delere from the Robert Koch Institute at the Ministry of Health, Berlin. In addition, the test for self-conducting uses flushing from the surface of the cervix as a sample, and not scraping, as a traditional analysis. According to many gynecologists, flushing is much more informative and it is absolutely not traumatic.

The self-administered test, Delphi Screener, is a sterile device similar to a syringe containing 5 ml of saline solution. When the piston is pressed, the solution is injected into the vagina, and after 5 seconds it is pulled back into the device by the piston. After that, the contents of the "syringe" are placed in a labeled container, which is sent to the laboratory.
