Homing Bombs for Prostate Cancer

New method gives hope for prostate cancer treatment

Radical "find and destroy" treatment can prolong the lives of thousands of men with advanced prostate cancer.

The approach, described by experts as "fundamentally new," uses high-tech molecules to "track down" tumors anywhere in the body and destroy them with a radiation shock.

Treatment with PSMA-617 molecules "targeted" at the prostate cancer marker glutamate carboxypeptidase II with particles of radioactive lutetium (177 Lu) attached to them became available for the first time in the UK, it was conducted privately, two men have already undergone therapy.

It is expected that if the global studies currently being conducted give positive results, this will allow the approval of the National Health Service, and then thousands more people will receive similar treatment.

Experts from the Congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago said that the treatment gives hope to men who have already exhausted all other possibilities. Without it, they will simply receive palliative care for the rest of their lives.

This approach has been recognized as the most promising method of cancer treatment in the last 15 years. It could benefit at least 5,000 men a year if made available through the National Health System.

Australian oncologist Arun Azad, who is testing the treatment on 200 men, which is one of ten trials worldwide, said: "This completely changes the situation. If the results are positive, it will change the approach to the treatment of prostate cancer."
