The solution to the problem of the spread of HIV infection can be the use of an effective preventive vaccine

"Unfortunately, as a result of the high genetic and, as a consequence, antigenic variability of HIV-1, it has not yet been possible to create an immunogen capable of inducing the formation of a protective immune response against a wide variety of genetic variants of the virus," Andrei Rudometov said during his speech at the OpenBio scientific conference.

According to him, the discovery of antibodies with viral neutralizing activity against a wide variety of HIV-1 isolates gave hope for the appearance of an effective vaccine. "Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they interact with conservative sites, which provides them with the ability to bind and neutralize a large number of different strains of the virus. However, it has not yet been possible to create an immunogen capable of inducing such antibodies," the scientist explained.

Now more and more researchers are coming to the conclusion that the vaccine should consist of several different immunogens. "Actually, the RV 144 vaccine, which has shown partial efficacy in clinical trials, also contains several immunogens. It is likely that an effective vaccine will be a combination of immunogens based on different strategies of their design.

Rudokopov presented the results of research on the design and study of antigenic and immunogenic properties of HIV-immunogens. "All the immunogens obtained as a result of the work done have specific antigenicity and immunogenicity against HIV-1," he stressed.
