"Viagra" for rabbits

"Female Viagra" tested on rabbits Alexey Tymoshenko, GZT.RU

Pharmacologists are developing a drug that is an analogue of the well-known Viagra. Only not for men, but for women.

The substance, which so far passes under the symbol UK-414,495, has been tested on rabbits. A detailed report on the trial (CP Wayman et al., UK-414,495, a selective inhibitor of neutral endopeptidase, potentiates pelvic nerve-stimulated increases in female genital blood flow in the anaesthetized rabbit) is published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. According to preliminary data, the new drug can actually increase blood flow to the genitals and increase their sensitivity.

Perhaps the most interesting graph from a scientific article.
Asterisks indicate a significant increase compared to control animals.

The experiments conducted by scientists are extremely far from any romance. Female rabbits lying under anesthesia, laser sensors for determining blood flow through the vessels feeding the vagina and clitoris, electrodes connected to nerves, constant registration of changes after administration of the substance – all this is described on eight pages of the study.

However, if the substance UK-414,495 turns out to be safe for use, then it will probably be able to change for the better the sexual life of those women who have difficulty achieving orgasm or even do not enjoy sexual intercourse at all.

(Do you want to put a bold experiment on yourself? The formula of "substance UK" in the article is given:
(R)-2-({1-[(5-ethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) carbamoyl]cyclopentyl}methyl) valeric acid.
Synthesize and check whether the promised effect will manifest itself and what side effects will be.)

VIP

The abbreviation VIP is not only a "particularly important person", it is also a vasoactive intestinal peptide, a substance found in many organs and regulating the activity of blood flow. The molecule, which is a chain of 28 amino acids, affects how much blood flows through the vessels and, consequently, how large its flow to the genitals is. Another substance, neutral endopeptidase, determines the concentration of VIP itself, and the potential drug UK-414,495 tested by pharmacologists affects neutral endopeptidase.

Thus, theoretically, UK-414,495 has a good chance of becoming a "female viagra".

It's all about the blood supply

The attention of scientists to the blood flow in the female genitals is not accidental. The effect of viagra on the male body is associated precisely with increased blood flow to the cavernous bodies, the spongy tissue from which the penis is formed. And women have an organ arranged on a similar principle – the clitoris. The similarity with the male reproductive organs of the clitoris (here it is shown inside the body) is not accidental. During embryonic development, both the clitoris and the penis develop from the same tissue,

Most of the clitoris is hidden inside the body, but, nevertheless, it has a high sensitivity. In addition, the susceptibility of this delicate organ is related to how well it is supplied with blood, so an increase in blood flow leads not only to a change in its size. The blood supply is influenced by many factors: from the emotional background to the state of the cardiovascular system. For this reason, the idea of using one approach to the treatment of erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia seems to doctors quite sound.

Gender characteristics

In the light of the similarity of the reproductive systems of men and women, a natural question arises – why can't we do with one drug? Attempts to use Viagra by women have been repeatedly made with varying success, and this experience has shown: after all, this drug is not so effective for the fair sex. Therefore, the search for drugs that can increase blood flow to the genitals with a minimum number of side effects continued, and UK-414,495 became one of the experimental drugs.

Viagra was prescribed to women not only to control sexual response. By increasing the blood flow, they tried to increase the chances of implanting embryos into the uterine wall. And initially, the widespread "medicine for impotence" was developed at all to combat high blood pressure. A strong erection was noted by volunteers in clinical trials as a side effect.

Fly in the ointment

However, according to the Telegraph (Female Viagra may become reality), pharmacologists in principle do not intend to bring the substance to clinical trials, and the development of the drug as such is postponed indefinitely. However, this does not mean that such funds, in principle, will never be released to the market.

The fact is that hundreds of different substances can be tested in experiments with animals, each of which will show certain signs of a potential drug. But safety and compatibility tests with other substances usually filter out most of the promising funds, after which another rigorous selection will be carried out as part of pilot clinical trials. After all, even HIV vaccines, which are vital to humanity, have not yet been able to break through all the tests provided, with one single exception.
