Optimal age for oocyte conservation

At what age should a woman freeze her eggs?

Copper news based on the materials of Science: How long should a woman wait to freeze her eggs?In 2012, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine announced that cryopreservation of oocytes (eggs) is no longer an "experimental" technique.

However, for economic and biological reasons, the optimal age for its implementation is still controversial.

If you freeze too early, it may be economically unprofitable: the woman is still fertile and able to conceive naturally. A frozen oocyte may not be needed, and the cost of the procedure is high. If a fence and cryopreservation are carried out later, the probability of a live baby being born decreases.

A group of scientists collected a large database on the ages and outcomes of pregnancies of women who used cryopreservation of germ cells. The researchers then created a model where the probability of having a live baby is calculated at the age of the mother from 25 to 40 years and it is assumed that attempts to conceive will occur 3, 5 or 7 years after the initial decision to freeze. These intervals were taken arbitrarily, since there is no data on the time interval between freezing and using eggs.

It turned out that the benefits of freezing are greater with an interval of 7 years. Freezing up to 32 years is probably not economically justified, since it increases the probability of successful gestation and the birth of a child by less than 10%. Women aged 37 receive the most benefits from cryopreservation: the probability of having a live child at the age of 44 turns out to be 51.6% (with natural conception at this age – only 21.9%). But this level cannot be considered sufficient in practice. Therefore, the best time for sampling and freezing is a period of up to 34 years, which increases the chances of having a child alive to about 70%. Considering that cryopreservation provides advantages when freezing eggs after 30 years, researchers consider the age of 31-33 years to be the best interval.

Since the cryopreservation technique is quite new, some hypothetical assumptions are used in the model, nevertheless, it is not only of scientific, but also of practical value.
