Stem cells against eczema

The results of a study conducted by specialists of the Seoul St. Mary's Clinic and Seoul National University under the guidance of Dr. Tae-Yoon Kim indicate that therapy with cord blood mesenchymal stem cells can be effective against moderate and severe manifestations of atopic dermatitis - the most common form of eczema.

Mesenchymal stem cells have previously demonstrated their therapeutic efficacy against atopic dermatitis in preclinical studies, but clinical data on this approach has not yet been available.

To assess the safety and effectiveness of the use of cord blood mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, the authors conducted a two-phase clinical study involving 34 adult patients suffering from moderate or severe eczema. Participants were randomly divided into two groups, one of which received subcutaneous injections of low doses of cells (2.5x10 7), and the second – subcutaneous injections of high doses of cells (5x10 7). One and three months after administration, the researchers examined the participants, including assessing the severity of the clinical parameters of the severity of the disease and side effects, as well as measuring the levels of biomarkers in the blood serum.

The results of the examination showed that a single injection of cord blood mesenchymal stem cells provided a dose-dependent improvement in the manifestations of atopic dermatitis. In 55% of patients who received a high dose of cells, a 50% decrease in the so-called eczema prevalence and severity index was registered 3 months after the procedure. The values of other indicators used for visual assessment of the severity of the disease also decreased significantly. In addition, cell therapy provided a decrease in the blood levels of immunological markers in the participants – immunoglobulin E and eosinophils. The therapy did not cause serious side effects.
