Glowing Sheep – hecho en Uruguay

Genetically modified phosphorescent sheep were born in Uruguay

InopressaThe jellyfish gene makes sheep glow in the dark, according to the editorial board of the newspaper Le Monde (Naissance de moutons genetiquement modifications phosphorescents en Uruguay).

A group of Uruguayan scientists announced on April 24 the birth of phosphorescent genetically modified sheep. "Genetically modified animals of this species have not yet been produced in Latin America. This successful experiment puts Uruguay on a higher level in world science," scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction of Uruguay and the Pasteur Institute said in a joint communique, the newspaper writes.

"The mentioned animals were born in October 2012 and developed normally. The sheep were no different from other, non-transgenic sheep. Their only feature is that they phosphoresce when ultraviolet light hits them, because there is a jellyfish gene in their DNA," says Le Monde.

"The purpose of the experiment was to test the effectiveness of the method of introducing a foreign gene into the DNA of animals. Scientists are now planning to start working with another gene, and this experiment will be more interesting, since its goal is to produce a specific protein, says study participant Alejo Menchaca. The fact is that scientists are trying to calculate the gene responsible for the production of protein, which is absent in humans with certain pathologies such as diabetes. Sheep with the newly introduced gene will be able to produce the necessary protein in their milk," the article says.
