I recognize the cute one by... DNA

Scientists have discovered similarities in the DNA of the spouses

<url>Scientists from the USA have found out that people tend to choose partners with similar DNA as their life partners.

A study on this topic was published in the journal PNAS (Domingue et al., Genetic and educational assortative mating among US adults – VM), briefly reported by Reuters (more details – press release University of Colorado Boulder: People more likely to choose a spouse with similar DNA, finds CU-Boulder study – VM).

Scientists have studied single-nucleotide polymorphisms in human genomes and found that the DNA of two people living in a couple is much more similar to each other than the DNA of any other pair of arbitrarily considered men and women. In total, geneticists analyzed more than 1.7 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms found in the human genome. But, as the researchers note, correlations due to a similar level of education of spouses are still higher than the genetic similarities found.

The sample of scientists consisted of 825 white non-Hispanic American couples whose spouses were born in the period from 1930 to 1950, have now retired and are still in stable relationships.

Single-nucleotide polymorphism is the difference between comparable DNA sections of the size of one nucleotide between different individuals of the same species.

The study of specialists was conducted with the support of the US National Institute on Aging. In it, the scientists used genomic data collected by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The results obtained by scientists are supposed to be used to build statistical models of human populations, in which, as a rule, the formation of alliances between people does not obey strict laws and is random.

In the future, scientists plan to study the genetic prerequisites for interracial and same-sex marriages, as well as to understand how the similarity of DNA affects friendship between people.
