The names of 42 scientists who won the third open competition for mega grants of the Government of the Russian Federation have been announced. As you know, the purpose of this project is to support scientific research conducted under the guidance of leading scientists in Russian universities, state academies of sciences and state scientific centers.

In total, 720 applications were received for the competition, 576 of them from universities and 144 from scientific organizations, 340 applicants were foreign citizens. Among the winners, 19 scientists have Russian citizenship (9 of them are dual), 6 are Americans, 3 are Japanese, 2 are citizens of Germany, Spain, Italy, Belarus, 1 is citizens of Australia, Israel, Ireland, Canada, the Netherlands, France. The winners included, in particular, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1989, Professor Sidney Altman of Yale University, awarded for the discovery of the catalytic activity of ribonucleic acids (see details below – VM).

The winners will conduct scientific research on the basis of 23 Russian universities and 13 scientific institutions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, Tomsk, Samara, Irkutsk and Sverdlovsk regions, as well as Krasnoyarsk and Perm territories.

Grants from the Government of the Russian Federation are allocated in the amount of up to 90 million rubles each for conducting scientific research for three years (2013-2015) with a possible extension for two years. A prerequisite is that universities and scientific organizations attract extra-budgetary funds in the amount of at least 25% of the grant amount.

Nobel laureate from the USA will develop antiviral drugs in the Russian Federation

RIA NewsAmerican microbiologist Sidney Altman, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1989, will receive a grant from the Russian government and will develop antiviral drugs at the Novosibirsk Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation reported on Wednesday.

Grants from the Russian government in the amount of up to 90 million rubles are allocated annually on a competitive basis for conducting scientific research for three years. Scientific institutions that submit applications together with leading scientists become participants of the competition. The joint application of the Institute of SB RAS and Altman in 2013 became one of the winners.

"Among the winners of the competition is the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry in 1989 for the discovery of the catalytic activity of ribonucleic acids, Professor Sidney Altman of Yale University, who will conduct scientific research at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine SB RAS," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the terms of the competition, Altman must arrive in Novosibirsk, where he will receive a laboratory and a staff of researchers at his disposal. His team will develop antibacterial and antiviral drugs that act at the intracellular level.
