Winter School at the biostation of the University of Helsinki

Grants for participation in the 18th Winter School and internships in Finland

The Finnish Center for International Mobility (CIMO) invites young researchers from Russia and Ukraine to participate in the 18th Winter School, which will be held from March 3 to 8, 2014 at the biological station of the University of Helsinki (Tvarminne zoological station of the University of Helsinki).

The purpose of the Winter School is to stimulate the mobility of researchers and establish cooperation relations between Finnish and foreign scientific groups, encouraging cooperation between Finnish and foreign universities.

Before submitting applications for participation in the School, potential participants are encouraged to establish contact with one or more research groups at Finnish universities and discuss the possibility of joint research projects with them. The presence of interest on the part of the Finnish scientific group in the admission of a foreign researcher will be considered by the organizers of the Winter School as an advantage of the candidate.

The Finnish Center for International Mobility pays for accommodation, meals and part of the transportation costs of the School participants.

Those students who will be invited to Finland to participate in projects of Finnish research groups after graduation from the Winter School will receive a CIMO scholarship. Usually the duration of the scholarship holder's stay in Finland is from 3 to 8 months. The scholarship amount in 2013 was 1200 euros per month.

The 18th Winter School is multidisciplinary, a broad discussion of the mechanisms of interaction in biology is expected – at the cellular, molecular levels, the interaction of organisms and materials. It is also supposed to discuss the problems of biocomputing and human-computer interaction.

Specialists working in such fields as biochemistry, linguistics, psychology, molecular and cellular biology, physiology, bioenergetics, biophysics, neuro- and nano–sciences, computer science and medicine are invited to participate in the School.

Applications for participation are accepted from graduate students (undergraduates) of Russia and Ukraine under the age of 35, participating in the School for the first time. Applications will not be accepted from participants of previous CIMO schools.

The deadline for submitting applications is October 21, 2013.
