Innovations in Russia: our number is the fourteenth

Russia has reached the 14th place in the world in terms of innovation

IA UNOVA MediaRussia took the 14th place in the Global Innovation Index ranking of innovativeness compiled by Bloomberg (50 Most Innovative Countries), overtaking Canada, Australia and the UK, among others - a total of 200 countries participated in the study.

In the process of analyzing 200 states and sovereign territories, the agency's analysts took into account seven factors: R&D intensity, productivity, high-tech density, researcher concentration, manufacturing capability, tertial efficiency and patent activity. The data sources were the World Bank, the World Intellectual Property Organization, The Conference Board, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and UNESCO.

R&D intensity – the amount of funds as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) that the state directs to research and development (weight – 20%). Productivity – GDP per hour of working time (20%). High-tech density (20%) is the percentage of public high–tech companies among all public companies in the state (including companies from the aerospace industry, defense enterprises, biotechnology companies, companies engaged in software development, semiconductor manufacturing, renewable energy sources, Internet services and Internet software).

The Researcher concentration indicator (20%) is the number of researchers per one million inhabitants. Manufacturing capability (10%) is the added value of production as a percentage of GDP. In turn, the factor of tertial efficiency (5%) takes into account attendance at higher educational institutions, the percentage of certified specialists from the total recruitment volume and the share of certified specialists in the total working population in the state, and patent activity (5%) – the number of patents filed by local companies per million residents and per $1 million of funds spent on research activities.

The USA, South Korea, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Singapore, Austria, Denmark and France took places from 1 to 10 in the Global Innovation Index innovation rating.

Russia took 14th place, between Norway (13) and Belgium (15). The country's positions on individual indicators can be seen in the table below. Russia demonstrated the weakest positions in terms of labor productivity (Productivity, 41) and the contribution of production to GDP (Manufacturing capability, 39), the strongest – in terms of the share of public high-tech companies (High-tech density, 2) and the share of certified specialists (tertial efficiency, 2).
