Anti-wrinkle patch

Scientists have created cosmetic microneedles

An international team of scientists, including Russian researchers, has developed and patented cosmetic patches containing soluble hyaluronic microneedles with active substances. The test results showed that needles do not affect the viability of cells, are not an invasive method and do not cause an inflammatory process, therefore they can be considered a cosmetic, not a medical product.

The researchers' work was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (Zvezdin et al., Microneedle patch based on dissolving, detachable microneedle technology for improved skin quality of the periorbital region. Part 2: Clinical Evaluation).

Non-invasive methods of delivering cosmetic and pharmaceutical active substances into the skin have long been the subject of numerous studies and developments, but the evaluation of their effectiveness is still difficult to control. In addition, such a delivery route is complicated due to the structure of the skin, which provides a barrier function in relation to the environment. Of particular interest is the delivery of substances to combat age-related changes, primarily wrinkles. That is why microneedle patches, which were originally developed for medical purposes, are attracting more and more attention in the field of aesthetics.

In the course of research, scientists have developed microneedle patches with hyaluronic acid to treat the area around the eyes. Products with microneedles are characterized by painlessness, the ability to control the depth of penetration of substances, ease of use and a short rehabilitation period after the procedure, since there is no damage to capillaries and nerve endings. Soluble microneedles were created from biodegradable polymers containing active components. After application to the skin, the microneedles dissolve, resulting in the release of the active substance. During testing, scientists proved the non–invasiveness of the developed type of needles - punctures did not exceed 40 microns and did not affect the viability of cells in any way. Histological studies have shown that immediately after application, microneedles overcome the stratum corneum of the skin, but do not go deeper than the level of the basement membrane. Two to four hours after the procedure, in most cases it was impossible to even see the channels of needle entry. In addition, there was no inflammatory process in response to this method of exposure. In most of the holes formed, remnants of hyaluronic acid were found, and penetration into the dermis did not occur, which is extremely important for products of a cosmetic, not medical nature.

The tested product has also proven its clinical safety, which opens up huge prospects for the delivery of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. The tests used the skin of volunteers after plastic surgery, so the data were obtained without preclinical animal experiments.
