Rating of investors in R&D: pharmacologists are in the top

R&D Scoreboard: top EU firms increase investment in innovation, but lag behind global competitors

The European Commission has published a report on European companies leading in terms of investment in the development of new technologies “EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard".

According to the results of the previous year, the positive dynamics of the volume of investments of European companies in the development of new technologies was noted. So, in 2010, the increase in this indicator was 6.1% compared to the previous year. At the same time, in 2009, the volume of investments in the development of innovative technologies decreased by 2.6% compared to the previous year.

It should be noted that in 2010 the global volume of investments in R&D increased by 4% compared to the previous year, whereas in 2009 this indicator decreased by 1.9% compared to 2008.

The ranking of the world's 50 largest investors in R&D includes 15 European companies, 17 American and 13 Japanese. The top 5 of this rating includes 2 pharmaceutical companies: Roche (Switzerland) and Pfizer (USA). According to the study, Roche invested 7.2 billion euros in R&D, and Pfizer — 7 billion euros. The French pharmaceutical company Sanofi took the 14th position with an indicator of 4.4 billion euros.
