"Our app will completely change the lives of diabetics"

Scientists from Cambridge have launched the first application for an artificial pancreas. The app will take over most of the routine procedures that people with diabetes should perform. It works with an insulin pump and monitors vital signs thanks to a complex algorithm.

The first licensed application for artificial pancreas CamAPS FX has become available to patients. It was developed by scientists from the University of Cambridge for people with type I diabetes. For now, the application will be controlled by doctors from a limited list of British clinics, but soon the use of the technology should be expanded.

The created algorithm is based on more than a decade of work by a team of researchers. "This is an important step in creating an affordable and technologically advanced artificial pancreas system," said the author of the study, Roman Hovorka.

The app works with an insulin pump and a glucose meter to automatically supply insulin to the body. In the future, CamAPS FX will take over most of the routine procedures for diabetes, which is especially important to prevent too low blood glucose levels.

CamAPS FX is licensed for use in women during pregnancy, as well as among children over the age of one year. The cost of a monthly subscription is £70 (about 6,500 rubles).

"Our technology will remove the burden of health management, which can be unpredictable during the day and especially at night. This will radically change the lives of diabetics," Hovorka said.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but this is an important milestone on the way to a fully automated and compatible artificial pancreas, the scientist concluded.
