Hydrogel capsules have been announced as a new treatment for obesity

A study by American scientists has shown that Gelesis 100 capsules containing hydrogel are able to safely reduce weight in overweight and obese people. The results of the first clinical trial were presented last Sunday at the joint conference of the International Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society ICE/ENDO 2014 in Chicago.
Gelesis100, developed by a Boston biotech firm, is a capsule containing tiny hydrogel particles that mix with food entering the stomach, swell and increase in volume.
This increases the volume of the stomach and small intestine, which causes a feeling of satiety and reduces the amount of calories consumed.
A 12-week randomized trial involved 128 people who took an experimental drug twice a day before meals, washing it down with water. Of these, 43 people took 2.25 grams of Gelesis 100 before lunch and dinner, 42 people – 3.75 grams of the drug and 43 people from the control group received a placebo containing cellulose. At the same time, all study participants followed a diet and performed physical exercises.
According to the results of the study, on average, by the end of the test, the weight of participants in the first group decreased by 6.1%, in the second group – by 4.5%, and in the control group – by 4.1%. The greatest weight loss (10.9%) was observed in people with a prediabetic condition, in which the fasting blood glucose level is increased to 100-125 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dc), which in terms of 5.6-6.9 millimoles per liter (mmol/l).
Of the side effects, the study participants most often had mild bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the severity of which decreased with a decrease in the dosage of the drug. According to the authors of the development, if the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves the use of Gelesis 100, these hydrogel capsules will become the first representatives of a new class of means for weight loss and obesity treatment.
