Don't put it off for later

Scientists have proved that the "clock is ticking" not only in women

It is generally believed that the physiological changes that occur with the female body after about 35 years can negatively affect the course of pregnancy and the health of the unborn child. However, this also applies to the male body: a review of studies conducted in this area over the past 40 years has shown that the age of the father also has a strong influence on his offspring. This is reported in an article published in the journal Maturitas (Phillips et al., Maternal, infant and childhood risks associated with advanced paternal age: The need for comprehensive counseling for men).

It is worth saying that there is no specific, uniform age for all, after which parents could be called "late"; as a rule, medical assessments range from 35 to 45 years. Nevertheless, due to the rapid changes in demographics around the world, the number of children born to parents is growing at a very young age. And if the dangers associated with the age of the mother are fully realized by both themselves and doctors, then the influence of the age of the father still remains a subject of discussion.

Therefore, in a new paper, Gloria Bachmann and her colleagues from Rutgers University tried to evaluate and summarize the available data on this problem. Alas, they confirmed that men who conceived a child at the age of more than 45 years expose their partners to increased risks during pregnancy, including the development of toxicosis and premature birth. On average, such children receive lower grades on the Apgar scale, gain weight more slowly and more often suffer from various developmental disorders. This negative influence persists in later life: the authors of the article report that subsequently a number of diseases are more common in these children – from oncological to mental.

The authors associate all these problems with a number of inevitable age-related deviations accumulating in the father's body. The health of the offspring can also be affected by the decreased quality and quantity of sperm, a decrease in the amount of testosterone, and the like.
