Insulin without injections

Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus can reduce the time and effort spent on blood glucose control, avoiding hypo- and hyperglycemic conditions. This is possible thanks to the Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery system.

The study will be presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society ENDO'21 by one of the authors Trang Lee, who is the medical director of Insulet Corporation.

The Omnipod 5 system was tested at home by 128 patients aged 14 to 70 years and 112 children aged 6 to 14 years. All the study participants suffered from type 1 diabetes, and during the first two weeks they received standard therapy – either multiple daily injections of insulin or an insulin pump, and then used a portable Omnipod 5 system.

In the group of adults and adolescents using the Omnipod 5 system, glucose levels were in the target range almost 74% of the time, while the general population with type 1 diabetes is often in the target glucose range 60% or less of the time. The level of glycated hemoglobin A1c in the adult/adolescent group was on average 0.4% lower when using Omnipod 5 than when using standard insulin therapy. One of their most important results in the adult/adolescent group was a reduction in hypoglycemia time.

The children participating in the study also demonstrated better blood glucose control when using Omnipod 5. The average hemoglobin A1c level decreased by 0.7%, and the duration of glucose in the recommended range increased by almost four hours a day. There was one case of diabetic ketoacidosis (excess ketones in the blood due to insufficient insulin), which can be attributed to insufficiency of the infusion site, and one severe case of hypoglycemia, which was not associated with a malfunction of the device.

The Omnipod 5 system is the first tubeless automated insulin delivery system integrated with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system, which automatically measures glucose levels every five minutes and communicates directly with the Omnipod 5 and adjusts the supply of insulin to the body.

Insulin is contained in a disposable capsule that attaches to the skin and is released within 72 hours. The system protects against both high and low blood glucose levels. In addition, it is simple and intuitive to use.
