Is it necessary to drink wine from childhood to prolong youth?

Red wine prolongs youth
CNewsR&D based on ScienceDaily: Young Rats Given Polyphenols Show Less Endothelial Function Determination With Aging

The normal functioning of the endothelium – the inner lining of blood vessels – is necessary for the immune system and the blood clotting system. It also provides the ability of the arteries to fully expand. The gradual deterioration of endothelial functions as the body ages is a key factor in the development of age-related diseases, especially diseases of the cardiovascular system. The results of many epidemiological studies indicate that moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages, especially those rich in antioxidants, is a kind of prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In the first place in this "wine list" is a red wine containing a large amount of polyphenols.

Researchers at Boston University decided to analyze the effect of red wine polyphenols on age-related vascular deterioration and decreased physical capabilities of rats. They assessed the condition of the vessels of animals aged 12, 20 and 40 weeks. The results of the analysis were compared with the corresponding indicators obtained when studying the functioning of the vessels of animals treated with aqueous solutions of red wine polyphenols and an inhibitor of the enzyme NADPH oxidase apocinin starting at 16 weeks and ending at 40 weeks of age. The control group of rats received water.

It turned out that regular intake of polyphenols and apocinin for a long time, starting from an early age (16 weeks), improved vascular functioning, normalized oxidative stress indicators and the expression of various proteins. At the same time, the intake of polyphenols also slowed down the aging-related decline in the physical capabilities of animals. The authors believe that the described effects of polyphenols are due to the normalization of oxidative processes and the expression of proteins involved in the formation of nitric oxide (NO) and the functioning of the angiotensin II-mediated signaling mechanism.

The members of the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research highly appreciated this work, which sheds light on the mechanisms by which polyphenols have a positive effect on the state of the body. The results obtained by the authors are in excellent agreement with the existing working hypothesis about the existence of specific interactions between polyphenols and certain enzymes. (Article by Stéphanie Dal-Ros et al. “Chronic intake of red wine polyphenols by young rats prevents aging-induced endothelial dysfunction and decline in physical performance: Role of NADPH oxidase" published in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications – VM.)

Some experts are of the opinion that interventions aimed at improving the functioning of the vascular endothelium (such as the use of red wine or other sources of polyphenols) should be started at an early age, which will postpone the aging of the body.
