Almost like a living thing

Sophia is a new realistic android robot from Hanson Robotics

DailyTechInfo based on Discovery News: Realistic Robot Lady Cheerfully Agrees To Destroy Humans

The well–known robotics company Hanson Robotics demonstrated its new creation - a photorealistic android robot, called Sophia, as part of the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, which was held recently in Austin, Texas. This highly integrated robotic device is designed for its use in education, maintenance and other areas where realistic interaction of machines with people is required. This robot differs from previous Hanson Robotics robots by significantly improved facial expressions and speech communication skills.

Judging by the reaction of some visitors, the creators of the Sophia robot managed to cross the threshold of the so–called "uncanny valley", a psychological threshold, after which a further increase in realism leads to the opposite effect - to the emergence of dislike and disgust among people communicating with this robot.

Increasing the realism of the Sophia robot was obtained through the use of a number of technologies patented by Hanson Robotics, including synthetic coating similar to human skin, cameras that simulate human eyes, speech recognition technologies, etc. Due to the large number of drives, the Sophia robot's "face" is able to simulate 62 basic expressions and mix them if necessary. And the prototype from which the robot's face was copied is Audrey Hepburn, the wife of David Hanson, president of Hanson Robotics.

"My main function is to communicate with people," the Sophia robot said in a short interview with a representative of the CNBC news agency.

The filling of Sofia's head clearly does not reach artificial intelligence. Or maybe the speech analyzer failed…
Most of the media wrote notes about this presentation under creepy headlines like "Robot Sofia promised to destroy humanity."
In fact, to Dr. Hanson's question, "Would you like to destroy humanity? Please say no," she replied, smiling sweetly and rolling her eyes.: "Okay, I will destroy humanity" (listen carefully to the conversation from 2.00 to 2.11 minutes of the video) – VM.

In their future work, the specialists of Hanson Robotics will try to make the Sophia robot even "smarter" and more realistic. "And in about 20 years, robots may become outwardly indistinguishable from living people. And such robots will help us in everyday life, teach our children, they will become our best friends," said David Hanson.
