Male contraceptive gel outraged feminists

The first major clinical trials of a contraceptive gel for men have begun in the USA. Activists are dissatisfied: in their opinion, scientists should first develop an equally safe and convenient contraceptive for women, and only then take up men's problems.

Today, only two reliable methods of contraception are available to men – condoms and vasectomy. Scientists have been trying for a long time to create a male analogue of birth control pills – safe, highly effective and reversible.

The most promising development in this direction is a special gel containing a combination of two hormones.

Progestin reduces sperm production to almost zero, and testosterone supports sexual functions. According to the creators of the gel, to achieve the desired effect, it is enough to rub it into the skin of the shoulders and back once a day.

Clinical trials of the contraceptive gel in the United States were scheduled for the summer, but started only now. Scientists intend to attract 420 couples to them. Previous studies have already demonstrated the safety of the gel and the absence of side effects, and now the team has to prove its effectiveness.

On social networks, the news about the male contraceptive gel caused a mixed reaction. Some activists said they were disappointed with the development because it offers men a more convenient and safer way of birth control than women have – birth control pills and intrauterine devices.

They are outraged that there is no question of creating a similar tool for women.

However, many women welcomed the beginning of the trials. They point out that today the care of contraception mainly lies with women. The new gel will change the situation and shift some of the responsibility to men. In addition, it will be very useful for couples in which a woman for one reason or another cannot take hormonal drugs.

It should be noted that the gel will not appear on the shelves of pharmacies soon, even if researchers confirm its effectiveness. The current clinical trials will last until 2022, after which additional ones will begin. Only after their successful completion, the researchers will apply to the FDA for approval of the drug.

Previous attempts to create oral contraceptives for men have failed. However , in The University of Dundee (UK) is confident that the right drug already exists – you just need to find it in chemical libraries. Recently, researchers received about $1 million for this purpose from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
