The Second All-Russian Congress on Gerontology and Geriatrics was held in Moscow on April 27-28, 2017 under the auspices of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Russian Association of Gerontologists and Geriatricians, with the support of the Society of Geriatric Medicine of the European Union, the International Society of Vascular Health, as well as the Elena and Gennady Timchenko Charitable Foundation. According to the organizers' press release, more than 1,000 people took part in the congress.

Currently, in the context of the growing life expectancy of the country's citizens, the Government of the Russian Federation pays special attention to the development of geriatric care, as well as to the expansion of international cooperation in this area. That is why the congress has become a unique event in the field of Russian geriatrics and gerontology.

Its opening was symbolic and reflected the fundamental principle of the development of effective geriatric care – the unity of interdepartmental cooperation, education and science. The participants were addressed by official representatives of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, Chief Geriatrician of the Ministry of Health of Russia O.N.Tkacheva, first President of the Russian Association of Gerontologists and Geriatricians Academician V.N.Shabalin, President of the International Society of Vascular Health and Aging, Academic Director of the Society of Geriatric Medicine of the European Union Professor A.Benetos.

Such an association reflects the priority tasks of the formation of geriatrics: the creation of a unified system of professional training of geriatric specialists, uniting not only medical, but also social workers at all levels, all those involved in the process of providing medical and social geriatric care.

A separate scientific symposium was devoted to longevity issues, at which the first results of the Moscow medical and social program "100-year-old citizen" were presented.
