I would go to geriatrics

The profession of a geriatrician will become one of the most popular in the coming years

The world's population is rapidly aging, and it will be simply impossible to send everyone to specialized institutions where elderly people will be cared for in ten years. Gerontology specialists will be highly valued, and they need to be trained right now.

By 2030, all baby boomers will be 65 years old, and in another five years there will be 78 million people aged 65 and older in the United States. For the first time in history, the number of elderly people will exceed the number of children and adolescents aged 18 and younger. This was reported by the US Census Bureau in its latest report.

All these pensioners will need medical care, treatment and assistance in everyday life. Therefore, geriatric doctors believe that it is already necessary to create a system in which elderly people will be able to live in their own homes, receiving appropriate care, and not spend the last years in medical institutions or nursing homes, writes Quartz.

"Previously, "caring for the elderly" meant working with pensioners over 65 years old. Now people at this age look and feel completely different. Now our main contingent is over 85 years old," said Sharon Brengman, a geriatrician from Upstate Medical University in New York and former president of the American Society of Geriatrics.

There are now only 7,200 practicing geriatricians in the United States. This is almost twice as much as it was in 2013. The problem is that by 2030 it will be necessary to double the number of specialists once again.

"We are very far behind in terms of deadlines. To become a doctor, students must study for four years in college, four more years in medical school, and then at least three years in residency (where they can stay for 10 years). And if you can become a therapist and a family doctor right after your residency, then geriatricians need another year to receive additional highly specialized education before starting their own practice," Brengman explained. At the same time, the efforts will not pay off financially at all.

According to the Medical Group Management Association, Geriartre's average salary in the US was $232,000 in 2017.

Therapists and family doctors earn more even during residency. And cardiologists and anesthesiologists receive $480,000 and $446,000, respectively, despite the fact that their additional training lasts three to four years. It is noteworthy that over the past five years, the salary of geriatricians has increased by 10%, which is one and a half times higher than for all specialists.

The aging of society is often associated with problems in the economy, for example, a shortage of workers and funds to pay pensions, but experts see it as new opportunities for growth. For example, the increase in the number of elderly people has already led to a boom in companies working in the longevity industry. There are 170 such startups in the UK alone.
