Optimistic cancer statistics

In 20 years, the death rate of Americans from cancer has decreased by 20 percent

The corresponding annual report of the American Cancer Society entitled "Cancer statistics 2013" (Cancer statistics, 2013) is published in the open access in the Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

According to the document, the number of deaths from cancer in the United States decreased from 215.1 per 100 thousand population in 1991 (peak value) to 173.1 per 100 thousand population in 2009. Thus, the total number of cancer deaths in 20 years (from 1991 to 2009) decreased by 20 percent, or 1.2 million people.

The graph shows the annual number of deaths from all types of cancer among men and women in the United States. The blue line represents the actual values, the red line represents the number of deaths that would have been expected if the mortality rate from cancer had remained at the peak level of 1991 – VM.

According to statistics, the mortality rate of patients suffering from lung, breast, prostate, colon and colorectal cancer continues to decline. At the same time, over 20 years, the number of deaths associated with the most common types of tumors: colorectal cancer, breast cancer (among women) and lung cancer (among men) decreased by 30 percent, and with prostate cancer – by 40 percent. According to scientists, this became possible due to the early detection and treatment of diseases, as well as a decrease in the number of Americans who smoke.

About 28 percent of new cancer cases among men are prostate cancer. The most common malignant neoplasm among women was breast cancer, which accounts for 29 percent of new cases of the disease.

Against the background of a general decrease in the incidence of various types of cancer, the number of patients in whom doctors diagnosed melanoma, malignant neoplasm of the liver, thyroid or pancreas has increased. In general, the number of new cases of the disease decreased slowly in men (by 0.6 percent per year) and remained stable in women over the last five-year period mentioned in the study (2005-2009).

The most common causes of death of cancer patients were lung, bronchial, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Half of cancer clinic patients die from these types of cancer. According to scientists, in 2013 lung cancer will cause 26 percent of deaths among women with malignant neoplasms and 28 percent among men. From 2005 to 2009, the number of men who died from malignant neoplasms decreased by 1.8% per year, and women – by 1.5% per year.
