Pedophiles need your help

Swedes will test a cure for pedophilia

Swedish scientists have launched a fundraising campaign on a British crowdfunding site to complete clinical trials of a drug to reduce impulsive sexual desire in pedophiles.

Karolinska Institute employees have started placebo-controlled clinical trials of the gonadotropin antagonist degarelix, which reduces the synthesis of the sex hormone testosterone and reduces libido. This drug is used in the treatment of prostate cancer, but scientists expect that it can help pedophiles cope with pathological sexual desire. In their opinion, the effect will be observed two weeks after the injection and will last at least three months.

To participate in the trials, called PRIOTAB (Paedophilia at Risk – Investigations of Treatment and Biomarkers), only men who voluntarily want to get rid of their inclinations are selected; active pedophiles subject to criminal prosecution are not involved in work. The recruitment of participants is conducted with the help of Preventell, a national anonymous support service for people suffering from their own excessive sexuality. According to the director of the service Stefan Arver (StefanArver), since its foundation in 2012, about 1,500 people have asked for help about pedophilia. The researchers expect to attract 60 volunteers, so far they have managed to find no more than five participants.

As explained by the head of the study Christopher Rahm (Christoffer Rahm), during the tests, "the most important risk factors for systematic sexual harassment" will be investigated: an increased level of sexual arousal, self-control and empathy. Scientists will receive their objective assessment with the help of neuropsychological testing, determination of the level of biomarkers in the blood and MRI of the brain.

The launch of the trials was made possible thanks to funding received from the Swedish Societies of Medicine and Medical Research, the Stockholm District and charitable foundations. These funds turned out to be insufficient, and the researchers decided to resort to crowdfunding in order not to depend on the manufacturer of the studied drug Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

The PRIOTAB study should be part of a large-scale project to search for genetic, neurological and hormonal markers of predisposition to pedophilia.
