Obesity harms the economy no less than war

Copper news

According to a study by the McKinsey Global Institute consulting company (How the world could better fight obesity), the damage caused to the global economy by the problem of obesity is almost equal to the damage caused by smoking and armed conflict.

According to researchers, more than 2.1 billion people in the world suffer from overweight (body mass index or BMI exceeds 25) and obesity (BMI from 30 and above), that is, about a third of the world's population. And by 2030, it is expected that the disease will affect half of the world's population.

The growth of obesity in the world has led to an increase in the incidence of diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It takes about two trillion dollars (about 2.8 percent of global GDP) to solve the health problems associated with obesity, which go to the treatment of diseases caused or associated with excessive obesity, and to pay for the sick leave of patients.

In this regard, experts recommend to reduce portions of meals and revise the concept of fast food to solve the problem of obesity. According to the authors of the study, such measures are more effective than raising taxes on products that contribute to obesity and conducting campaigns in support of a healthy lifestyle.
