Scientists suggested that students take cocaine

Copper newsThe staff of King's College London invited students to take part in a scientific study, during which volunteers will have to use cocaine.

This is reported by the London Evening Standard (Students invited to take cocaine for London University's research). According to the scientists, they received all the necessary permits from the ethics committee to conduct this study.

An offer to participate in an unusual scientific work was received by 18,600 students by e-mail. As stated in the letter sent out by the staff of the Royal College, students can "take part in studies related to the nasal administration of cocaine." Volunteers who agree to take part in the trial will receive "reasonable financial compensation" for the time spent and expenses incurred. The aim of the work is to study which pathway cocaine and its metabolites take in the human body.

The report states that students who use cocaine for entertainment, as well as medical students, including future dentists, are not allowed to participate in the research. As an additional condition, it is indicated that within 120 days volunteers will be prohibited from cutting and dyeing their hair.

The authors of the work explained that after nasal administration of cocaine, biological samples (blood, urine, hair, sweat, oral fluids) will be collected repeatedly, the analysis of which will help to study the spread of cocaine in the human body. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the UK National Health Service (NHS). The progress of the work will be monitored by doctors from the clinical toxicology department of St. Thomas Hospital, where the study will take place.

"This is a very important scientific study, the purpose of which is to study how cocaine and its metabolites are distributed in the human body. To carry out this work, we have received all the necessary permits concerning ethics issues. The work will be carried out under the strictest supervision of doctors in the hospital premises intended for this purpose," the representative of the college explained.

According to statistics, about 700 thousand Britons took cocaine in 2012, which made it the second most popular drug after cannabis.
