A heart attack? Urgently put on the refrigerator!

The Germans have developed a portable cooling vest for heart attack patients

Copper newsGerman scientists have created a cooling vest to provide emergency care to patients with myocardial infarction.

According to medGadget, the device was developed by specialists of the Hohenstein Institute in Benningheim, Germany. (The press release “Help for cardiac arrest patients – fast and without electricity – Textile cooling pads in new hypothermia emergency vest protect against neurological damage” can be read on the Institute's website – VM.)

Acute myocardial infarction is a violation of the blood supply to the area of the heart muscle. In some cases, this condition is accompanied by cardiac arrest. Circulatory insufficiency is fraught with damage to tissues sensitive to lack of oxygen (primarily the brain). At the same time, a decrease in body temperature to 32-34 degrees Celsius can significantly reduce the risk of brain damage by slowing down the metabolism of neurons.

Employees of the Hohenstein Institute have developed a porous moisture-resistant fabric and created cooling pillows from it. By combining several such pillows together, the scientists assembled a vest. The pillows were filled with water and connected to a sealed container with a mineral from the zeolite group. When the valve is opened, the zeolite cools the water to almost zero degrees.

Thus, the cooling vest can work in the absence of any power source. In the future, the developers intend to equip the device with a portable defibrillator, as well as sensors for recording an electrocardiogram. Such devices will be able to be used by persons without special training, in connection with which it is proposed to equip public transport vehicles and various institutions with vests.

As previously reported, in August 2012, ambulances of the Air Ambulance company in London were equipped with devices for cooling the brain of patients with circulatory disorders. The device cools the brain by feeding a cold mixture of gases through tubes that are inserted into the patient's nostrils.
