And defeats from victory…

Scientists told why hockey is dangerous for the life of fans

Observations of the life of fans of National Hockey League teams have shown that watching hockey on TV or at the stadium significantly increases the incidence of heart attacks, according to an article published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology (Gebhard et al., Hockey Games and the Incident of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction).

"For the first time, we checked whether there is a connection between hockey battles and how often people get to the emergency room and cardiology departments of clinics. We chose the fans of our city team for our experiments, since the Canadiens are one of the most popular and titled NHL teams with the most loyal fans," said Hung Ly from the University of Montreal (in a press release Hockey victories may increase heart attack risk in Canadian men – VM).

In recent years, scientists have become seriously interested in how sport affects not only the health of professional athletes themselves, but also fans who worry about them in the stands and on sofas at home. For example, a few years ago, doctors noticed that the number of heart attacks and ambulance calls increased several times during one of the last World Football Championships.

A year ago, Canadian doctors found out that watching hockey can also increase the likelihood of developing heart problems. On average, they found that a fan's heart beats twice as fast during a match as at other times. This can provoke heart attacks, strokes and other potentially fatal malfunctions in the cardiovascular system.

In fact, this phenomenon has been studied for a long time, but in the vast majority of cases, if not in all, among the fans of the losing teams. For example, the British after the match with the Argentine team at the FIFA World Cup in 1998, or the Dutch after their team was excluded from the 1996 European Championship. And that Kondraty can come not only from grief, but also from too much joy, has also been known for a long time. But once again to remind the fans, especially hypertensive patients and other heart patients, that it is necessary to "get sick" by stocking up on sedatives and other pills, and not to get drunk on joy, it is not harmful at all - VM.

Lee and his colleagues went further and checked whether such a causal relationship really exists by studying how many people were hospitalized with heart attacks and other heart diseases in the days when Montreal hockey players played regular season or Stanley Cup playoffs.

As these observations showed, the Canadiens' victories came at a high price not only for the club's players themselves, but also for their fans, which especially concerned young men under the age of 55. According to doctors, the frequency of heart attacks increased by about 40% during Montreal's home victories. Contrary to scientists' expectations, overtimes, shootouts and decisive playoff games had almost no effect on the frequency of hospitalization of "hockey victims".

Interestingly, this connection was especially pronounced during the victories, and was less obvious after the defeats of the Canadiens. As scientists suggest, not only increased heart rate and other physiological changes were involved in increasing the frequency of heart attacks, but also copious alcoholic libations, large portions of fatty foods and other ways to celebrate victory.

Another interesting fact was that watching hockey did not affect women in this way, despite the fact that they are more susceptible to heart and vascular diseases. Such a connection did not arise even if they were inveterate Montreal fans and worried about the team no less than men.  All this, as Lee and his colleagues emphasize, does not mean that watching hockey should be completely banned. This fact, according to them, should be taken into account by the medical services of "hockey" cities and the owners of ice arenas when holding matches.
