Bra does not increase the risk of breast cancer in older women

According to the results of a population-based case-control study conducted by scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, wearing a bra is not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women.

In recent years, publications have periodically appeared in the press, according to which wearing a bra is a risk factor for breast cancer. This is due to the fact that the bra can squeeze blood and lymph vessels and make it difficult to remove decay products. However, there is no scientific data that would confirm this statement.

In order to understand this issue, the authors conducted a carefully planned epidemiological study, which involved 454 women with invasive breast duct cancer and 590 women with invasive breast lobule cancer – the two most common types of malignant tumors of this organ. The control group consisted of 469 women who did not have the disease. All the women, whose age at the time of the study varied from 55 to 74, were in menopause.

As part of the study, the authors conducted personal interviews with each of the participants in order to obtain information related to demographic, family and reproductive history. The women also answered a series of structured questions about the history of wearing a bra throughout their lives. Among others, they were asked questions about the age at which they started wearing a bra, about wearing a bra "with bones", the size of the bra and the volume of its cup, the number of hours per day and days per week during which they wore a bra, as well as changes in the features of wearing a bra during life.

When analyzing the collected data, the researchers did not reveal a relationship between the studied parameters and the risk of developing the two types of cancer under consideration.
