Brush all teeth at once and in 10 seconds

Julia Korowski, XX2 century, based on Interesting Engineering: World's First Fully Automatic Toothbrush Will Clean Your Teeth in Just 10 Seconds

A fully automatic toothbrush has been developed that cleans all teeth at once in just 10 seconds. Its creators, the company Amabrush, quite successfully raise money on Kickstarter: impressed Internet users are ready to give a million euros instead of the requested 50,000, and the campaign will last another 22 days. And how can you not be impressed here – entrepreneurs promise to save customers no less than 100 days of life.

In action, Amabrush looks pretty stupid: it feels like an adult has put a huge dummy in his mouth. But if you close your eyes to this, the gadget has many other advantages – or at least that's what the manufacturers say. The device consists of a ball with an electronic filling and a kind of silicone mouth guard, which is attached to it with strong magnets. According to Amabrush, silicone is antibacterial and kills 99% of germs. Inside there are soft brushes located at an angle of 45 degrees to the gingival edge and microchannels through which the paste enters.

To brush your teeth, you need to insert the device into your mouth and press the button – under the influence of vibration, the bristles will begin to move back and forth, simultaneously cleaning the entire oral cavity. The whole process takes 10 seconds. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth for about two minutes, so it may seem that this time is not enough, but the creators of Amabrush have counted everything:

An adult's mouth contains 32 teeth, and each tooth has 3 visible surfaces that need to be cleaned. Therefore, every time you brush your teeth, you need to clean 96 surfaces (3*32). With a regular or electric brush, you need to brush your teeth for at least 120 seconds – this allows you to clean each surface for only 1.25 seconds. With Amabrush, you brush every surface for 10 seconds as it cleans all teeth at the same time. This means that the brush takes 8 times longer to clean each surface, and the total duration of the process is 12 times less (10 seconds instead of 120).

After cleaning, the mouth guard is rinsed with water, just like a regular toothbrush. The creators of Amabrush note that the whole family can use one device, it is enough to buy a few additional caps. Brushes need to be changed every 3-6 months, otherwise they lose effectiveness. The paste in the capsule lasts for a month, charging – for two weeks. For Kickstarter donors, the regular (79 euros) and the Pro version (99 euros) are available, which differ in the number of capsules and charging: in the advanced version, it is wireless. The paste costs 3 euros per capsule and is available in three variations: Extra Fresh, Whitening and for sensitive teeth.

The company does not undertake to claim that Amabrush is better than a conventional or electric brush. Both, the creators explain, are just a tool. The effectiveness depends on how it is used. The problem is that many people brush their teeth incorrectly or do not brush them at all (for example, because they are too tired in the evenings) – and that's exactly the problem Amabrush can solve. Whether this is true or not, we just have to find out – fortunately, entrepreneurs have collected 20 times more on Kickstarter than they were going to and promise to send the first samples in December this year.
