Cancer prevention: Our hands are not for boredom

The number of orgasms and the risk of prostate cancer

Regular orgasm in a man, that is, at least 21 times a month, reduces the risk of prostate cancer by 22%, while ejaculation is important and it does not matter whether it occurs as a result of sexual intercourse, masturbation or nocturnal emissions. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the Medical School at Harvard University (USA). The results of this study were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Urology in New Orleans.

In the course of a major study conducted by American scientists for 18 years, the health of 32 thousand healthy men was studied, 3839 of whom were subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

As a result of the experiment, the researchers found that men aged 40-49 years who have an orgasm at least 21 times a month, the risk of prostate cancer is reduced by 22% compared to those men who ejaculate no more than seven times a month. Consequently, frequent ejaculations really protect against prostate cancer, despite the diet, lifestyle and heredity of men.

According to the head of the research team Jennifer Ryder, scientists cannot explain the exact way of the effect of frequent ejaculations on the reduced risk of prostate cancer at the moment. However, there are two theories: according to the first, ejaculations "wash out" dangerous chemicals from the prostate that contribute to the development of cancer, and according to the second, due to frequent ejaculations, sperm is renewed, and there are fewer old cells that can turn into cancerous.

According to the World Cancer Research Foundation, over 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer were recorded in 2012. This indicator accounts for 15% of all male oncological diseases in the world and 8% of all new cases of cancer.

This news (which is actually not news at all, but a clarification of the percentages of the average difference in a long-known fact) reached the English-language media only in December 2015, although the conference took place in May, and the message Rider et al. PD6-07 Ejaculation Frequency And Risk Of Prostate Cancer: Updated Results From The Health Professionals Follow-Up Study published in the appendix to The Journal of Urology in April. But it's never too late to do prevention – VM.
