Electronic cigarettes do not help to abandon the usual

Since the advent of electronic cigarettes, there has been a debate about how safe these devices are for the body and whether they help to quit smoking. A new study has shown that many vaping users do not stop smoking regular cigarettes. At the same time, smoking both types of cigarettes increases the unpleasant consequences of tobacco use: coughing, wheezing and sputum production.

A group of researchers led by Linnea Hedman from Umeå University interviewed 30,000 Swedes. It turned out that 11% of respondents smoke exclusively classic cigarettes. 0.6% of people prefer only electronic cigarettes, and 1.2% of survey participants smoke both.

Among those who quit smoking, 1.1% of respondents use electronic cigarettes. At the same time, 9.8% of smokers turn to electronic cigarettes from time to time, without giving up the main source of nicotine. Scientists suggest that people most often replace regular cigarettes with vape not because of the desire to quit smoking, but because of the ban on smoking in public places. Where smoking is allowed, tobacco lovers do not change the bad habit.

The survey showed that the combination of two types of smoking increases the risk of respiratory symptoms: cough, copious sputum and wheezing. These symptoms are experienced by 26% of non-smokers in Sweden, 34% of vapers, 46% of supporters of classic cigarettes and 56% of those who combine different types of smoking.

Electronic cigarettes appeared on open sale in the early 2000s, so it is not yet possible to judge their long-term effect. However, according to scientists, it is not worth recommending electronic devices as a method of quitting smoking.

According to data for 2014, the use of cigarettes per capita per year in Sweden is 869 pieces. In Russia, this number is equal to 2,690 cigarettes.

The scientists presented the results of the study at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society (European Respiratory Society International Congress) in Milan.
