A study by Japanese scientists has shown that e-cigarettes contain about 10 times more carcinogens than conventional cigarettes. According to Business Insider (Scientists Say E-Cigs Contain 10 Times As Many Cancer Chemicals As Cigarettes), elevated amounts of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were found in samples of liquid for smoking devices.

"In one of the brands of electronic cigarettes, the level of carcinogens was more than 10 times higher than their content in a regular cigarette," said one of the authors of the study Naoki Kunugita from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the concentration of harmful substances increases even more when the electronic device overheats.

"We call them electronic cigarettes, but in reality it is a product completely different from ordinary tobacco," he added.

Currently, the Japanese government is already studying the issue of stricter regulation of the electronic cigarette market in the country. In August, the World Health Organization (WHO) also called for limiting the advertising of these devices and banning the sale of e-cigarettes to teenagers and pregnant women.
