Scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) have found that lifestyle changes within just 16 weeks can significantly reduce the need for drugs used to combat high blood pressure. It also helps to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes and helps prolong life. This is reported in a press release on the portal of the American Heart Association: Lifestyle changes reduce the need for blood pressure medicines.

Cardiologists explained that patients with high blood pressure (systolic from 130-160 millimeters of mercury, diastolic – 80-90) should pay special attention to diet and regular exercise. The recommendations apply to both men and women.

Scientists came to such conclusions after conducting an experiment involving 129 people aged 40 to 80 years with excess weight and high blood pressure. The subjects were randomly divided into three groups. The researchers have developed a special 16-week program for each of them.

The patients who fell into the first category switched to a special diet with a high content of fruits, vegetables and low – red meat, salt and sweets, and also played sports with trainers three times a week. The members of the second group ate according to the same program, but did not train, the third group did neither. At the same time, no one took medications.

As a result, it turned out that the participants of the first group managed to significantly lose weight (by an average of 8.6 kilograms) and lower blood pressure – the "upper" by 16 points, the "lower" by ten.

At the same time, only 15 percent of the patients who underwent the experiment under the first program needed medications after it.
