Khaki gum

American developers have begun testing "combat gum" for the military

Russian PlanetThe US Military Institute of Surgical Research (Army Institute of Surgical Research) has begun testing a product called "combat gum", created specifically to prevent oral diseases in the US military, writes the New Yorker (Zero Dark Cavity).

The product contains synthesized antimicrobial peptides, natural molecules that can be found in human saliva, killing pathogenic bacteria and preventing the risk of caries and plaque.

The American military often face problems with oral hygiene and are often forced to visit the dentist's office. The US Armed Forces spend $100 million annually on dental procedures, in some cases it is necessary to transport soldiers to another continent for emergency care.

In order for the gum to work effectively, it will need to be chewed at least three times a day. According to Dominic Zero, director of the Indiana Research Institute of Health and Dentistry, the product is not designed to replace brushing teeth.

When the gum becomes available to the military and proves its effectiveness, the product can be sold to civilians, and first through pharmacy chains and by prescription.

Representatives of the US Army hope that if chewing gum becomes widespread among civilians, it will help prevent dental diseases among conscripts.

"Combat gum" has been under development by the Institute of Surgical Research for seven years, the total cost of the program amounted to $ 12 million.
