RIA News

Scientists from the University of Newcastle have found that taking painkillers in large quantities can provoke obesity, insomnia and hypertension. The release of the corresponding study is published on the Medical Xpress website (Dangers of commonly prescribed painkillers highlighted in study).

First of all, experts studied the side effects of widespread gabapentin, pregabalin and several painkillers of opioids. It turned out that all these substances double the risk of developing these diseases.

The authors of the article assessed the state of the cardiovascular system and metabolic indicators in 133 thousand people listed in the UK Biobank database. They divided the participants of the experiment into two groups: those who take painkillers together with cardiopreparations, and those who took only medications for heart diseases.

The results of the study showed that patients from the first group were 95 percent more likely to notice the appearance of obesity, 82 percent – an increase in waist size and 63 percent – the development of hypertension. Many also complained of insomnia.
