The antioxidant will find a hole

Do not exaggerate the usefulness of greenery

ABC Magazine based on Kingston University Materials: Researchers Challenge Super Food ClaimsThe widespread public confidence in the antioxidant properties of products such as broccoli, blueberries and whole grains prompted researchers from Kingston University in London to conduct an experimental study quantifying the penetration of polyphenols contained in these products into the bloodstream.

In the experiment, scientists used a model representing a single layer of cells that exactly repeats the morphological and functional features of the microvilli of the epithelium of the small intestine. This model allows us to evaluate the systemic effectiveness of substances entering the body by analyzing their intestinal absorption.

A study conducted by Lucy Jones found that most of the products attributed to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties do not have a systemic effect on the body. Despite the high content of polyphenols and the positive effect of polyphenols on cell cultures grown in the laboratory, these substances do not penetrate into the bloodstream from the intestine in a living organism. Thus, the beneficial effect of such useful products as parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme can only be local, affecting exclusively the intestinal cavity.

The same model is planned to be used to evaluate the effectiveness of nitrogen compounds often used by athletes. Also, this model of the small intestine can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional medicine, in particular Chinese herbal medicines that promise a cure for cancer.

From the editorial office:
Scientists, of course, are such scientists, but it's hard to believe. And the gut model is not an accurate instrument like a chromatograph, which can measure the concentration of polyphenols in the blood of people who have been on a diet for a month with their increased content and, if possible, complete absence, and vitamin P is a mixture of polyphenols, and from ascorutin tablets (P + C) they probably get into the capillaries, since it is from their fragility is prescribed... In general, do not give up greenery: it is quite possible that the above results will soon be completely refuted.
