Vibrating capsule will help with constipation
Despite the active use of laxatives, about half of patients suffering from chronic constipation are not satisfied with the results of treatment due to side effects, doubts about the safety of long-term therapy or its ineffectiveness.
Researchers at the Tel Aviv Suraski Medical Center conducted a pilot clinical study of a new non-pharmacological drug for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and constipation with irritable bowel syndrome, which is a vibrating capsule for oral administration. Developed by the Israeli company Vibrant Ltd., the capsule, inside of which there is a miniature motor, is programmed in such a way that vibration begins 6-8 hours after entering the digestive tract. Vibration (mechanical stimulation) causes intestinal contractions and promotes the movement of feces.
A total of 26 patients participated in the study, who had to refrain from taking laxatives for two weeks before the start of the study. During the study, all participants swallowed a vibrating capsule twice a week and filled out a questionnaire containing questions about perceived intestinal peristalsis and taking laxatives. Processing of the collected data showed that the use of the experimental capsule increased the frequency of spontaneous bowel movements from 2 to 4 times a week. Patients also experienced a decrease in the severity of constipation symptoms, including difficulties in exiting feces and incomplete emptying. At the same time, the therapy was accompanied by minimal side effects.
The authors plan to conduct a controlled double-blind clinical trial to confirm the preliminary results and explore the potential of experimental therapy.
