A cure for eye cancer has been found

Researchers from the University of Utah have developed a new method of treating types of malignant tumors that are difficult to treat, such as retinoblastoma, or eye cancer. The created drug blocks a protein that promotes the growth and spread of cancer. The article was published in the journal Cancer Cell (Yoo et al., ARF6 Is an Actionable Node that Orchestrates Oncogenic GNAQ Signaling in Uveal Melanoma).

In healthy cells, ARF6 perform the function of transmitting signals to regulate the movement of vesicles inside the cell – vesicles containing nutrients. In addition, the protein plays a role in the remodeling of the cell membrane and actin, another protein that forms the cytoskeleton of cells. A mutation in the gene encoding ARF6 alters the protein, causing it to transmit signals that contribute to the occurrence of cancer.

Scientists believe that blocking the functions of ARF6 will help treat not only retinoblastoma, but also other types of malignant tumors, such as skin, breast, brain or kidney cancer. Testing of the developed drug on laboratory mice prone to eye cancer showed that the treatment prevents the appearance of tumors in animals in six out of 11 cases. Those malignancies that did develop were significantly smaller than in control mice.

Retinoblastoma is a retinal tumor that develops most often in childhood, and in most cases is transmitted genetically.
