Chinese doctors have announced the world's first successful attempt to combat genetic obesity. A group of children with Prader–Willi syndrome lost weight after experimental treatment with exposure to microbiota.
According to Xinhua (Study helps kids with obesity gene), the experiment lasted two years, 17 genetically obese children participated in it, who were treated by specialists from Shanghai University. Over the past three months, participants in the experiment who had previously been diagnosed with Prader–Willi syndrome lost an average of 18% of their weight.
Prader–Willi syndrome is a rare hereditary disease caused by a disorder in one of the chromosomes. Obesity is one of the most severe companions of the syndrome, leading to a fatal outcome. Simply put, such people can eat without stopping, without satisfying their hunger. There is currently no treatment for the disease.
The Chinese doctors do not disclose the details of the therapy, noting only that they acted "by an experimental method on the bacterial flora in the gastrointestinal tract." Doctors noted that during treatment, one of the children's weight dropped from 140 to 73 kg and has not yet grown more.
"This is the world's first successful attempt to control the weight of genetically obese children. The intestinal microbiota has turned out to be an excellent object for influencing an ailment that is considered incurable," said Zhao Liping, a representative of Shanghai University.
