Beijing, February 27 (Xinhua). On Tuesday, a production standard for working with human embryonic stem cells (ESC) was published in Beijing, which will normalize the development of relevant clinical trials and experiments in the country.

The standard, the first of its kind in China, was developed by several Chinese research organizations, including the Chinese Society of Cell Biology, the Institute of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ANC) and the Chinese Institute for Standardization.

The standard defines the main characteristics of human ESCs, and also establishes technical regulations for quality control and relevant requirements for the use and distribution of human ESCs.

In recent years, more than 30 clinical research projects in the field of ESCs have been implemented and registered in China. Nevertheless, as experts note, the ESCs were very different, as they were obtained from different sources and by different methods.

Experts believe that there is an urgent need to adopt a single standard to promote more effective development of clinical research and experiments in this area.

The standard will play an important role in protecting the rights and interests of research objects, standardizing the development of ESC research and promoting their application, said Zhou Qi, head of the Research Institute of Zoology at the APK.

"The standard is a cornerstone in the development of biotechnology in China," said Sun Yanzhong, deputy director of the Chinese Center for the Development of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China.
