All Japan Bank iPSK

Japan has created the world's first stem cell bank

Tatiana Kaliberda, RIA VladTimeA unique project has begun in Japan, the goal of which is to create a one-of-a-kind nationwide bank of universal iPS cells, that is, stem cells of non-embryonic origin.

It will be possible to grow any human organs and tissues from them in the near future.

Experts assume that by the end of 2014 they will be able to accumulate biomaterials in their bank that will not cause rejection in 20 percent of the population of the state. This information was shared with RIA "VladTime" by employees of the Institute of iPS Cells at Kyoto University. It should be noted that the head of this institution is the Nobel laureate in medicine and physiology, Professor Shinya Yamanaka.

The Institute has become the basis of this project, but a number of other scientific centers and the Japanese Red Cross are also taking part in it.

It is known that currently, epithelial cells or the patient's own blood are used for the production of iPS cells, and everything is done so that subsequently grown tissues do not encounter such a negative reaction as rejection after transplantation.

However, a qualitatively new technique developed by Professor Yamanaka makes it possible to grow and accumulate stem cells (iPS cells) in advance. From them, if necessary, you can quickly and not very expensive to grow the necessary tissues. Considering that it is unrealistic to collect the necessary cells of all residents of Japan in a bank, it was decided to use cells of a special type, so to speak universal, which are not rejected. According to experts, only a few percent of the population has such a biomaterial. Therefore, the search for suitable donors began in the spring of 2013.
