Antibacterial soap banned

The US authorities have banned soap with triclosan

The FDA has issued a ban on the sale of soap containing certain components of antibacterial action, including triclosan (FDA issues final rule on safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps).

According to the FDA, industrialists failed to prove the safety of antibacterial components when used on a large scale as part of detergents, but their harm was obvious. The ban is imposed with a one-year delay. After this time, triclosan, tricorcarbane and 17 other components cannot be used as part of any varieties of soap, both solid and liquid. The ban does not apply to other products yet: for example, Colgate Total toothpaste still contains triclosan, but in this case the manufacturer managed to prove to the FDA that the benefits of using it really outweigh the harm.

In fact, triclosan is being added everywhere today, although there is no reliable data on the benefits of such an additive in soap. But there is evidence that triclosan can stimulate the appearance of resistant microorganisms, disrupt hormonal balance, interfere with the work of muscle cells, including the heart. The positive effect of this substance in toothpaste – reducing inflammation and the development of gum diseases – outweighs the disadvantages. But in the case of hand washing products, manufacturers failed to prove to the FDA that its use would be really useful.

Getting from soap in huge quantities into water, triclosan accumulates in dangerous quantities both in the environment and in the human body. Therefore, back in 2013, the FDA demanded to provide the necessary certificates for this; now, three years later, management officials have stated that there is no satisfactory evidence. Some industry giants, such as Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble, started changing the composition of their products ahead of time. Meanwhile, the FDA asked them for information on the safety of other antiseptic additives, including ethanol, isopropanol and benzalkonium chloride, which are used in wet wipes.
