German authorities close the clinic where they were treated with stem cells
RIA News

The Ministry of Health of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is closing a clinic where unauthorized methods of stem cell therapy were used to treat diseases such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease and spinal cord injuries, Science Insider (Authorities Shut Controversial German Stem Cell Clinic) reports with reference to the WirtschaftsWoche newspaper.

XCell Clinic has been operating in Dusseldorf and Cologne for three years. Its management took advantage of a loophole in European legislation, which gave the right to continue using this method of treatment without formal approval for 18 months after the entry into force of European standards governing stem cell treatment. However, this period expired in January.

In addition, local authorities are considering the possibility of initiating a criminal case against the administration of the clinic and one of the doctors in connection with two cases where treatment led to fatal consequences. In October 2010, an 18-month-old boy died after injecting stem cells into his brain. A few months later, a 10-year-old boy was on the verge of death after a similar procedure. Now his condition is much worse than before the treatment.

To date, more than 3 thousand patients have passed through the clinic, each of whom left 7.5 to 26 thousand euros in its cash register.

The founder of the clinic, Dutch doctor Cornelis Kleinbloesem, moved to Germany in 2006 after his clinic in the Netherlands was closed.

According to WirtschaftsWoche, the co-owners of the clinic, the Californian millionaire Pawan Seth and the French investor Henri Stamm, dismissed Kleinblosem on April 22, appointing the new co-directors of the supervisor Hans de Munter and the chief physician Dirk Happich.
