Cryobank Scandal

A clinic in Chicago has been sued 40 times for spoiling donor sperm

Copper news40 lawsuits were filed by sperm donors on Tuesday, August 20, in the Cook County Circuit Court against the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Clinic in Chicago.

The plaintiffs accuse the administration of the medical institution of failing to fulfill its obligations to cryopreservate their seminal fluid, the Chicago Tribune reports (Lawsuits: Northwestern Memorial damaged sperm samples).

According to one of the lawyers of the victims, Matthew Jenkins, the sperm samples of his clients became unusable as a result of the breakdown of the container in which they were stored at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital clinic.

The incident occurred in April 2012, at the same time the administration of the medical institution had to notify more than 250 donors about it.

"This sperm was the only chance for many or even most of them to become biological fathers," said Matthew Jenkins. The plaintiffs demand material compensation from the clinic for the damage caused to them.

Representatives of the clinic administration, commenting on the incident, said: "We deeply regret that this malfunction took place, but in many similar cases, sperm samples are still suitable for artificial insemination."

According to the administration, after the malfunction was noticed, the samples were immediately placed in a serviceable container.
