DNA analysis instead of gastro- and colonoscopy

Stomach and bowel cancer will be detected by a blood testCopper news
Blood tests can replace endoscopic examinations (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) in the search for malignant neoplasms of the stomach and intestines, reports lol.co.za .

Two relevant reports were presented at the ECCO-ESMO Cancer Congress in Berlin.

A group of researchers led by Ulrike Stein from the Berlin Center for Molecular Medicine and the Charite Clinical Hospital has developed a test based on the detection of the S100A4 gene in the patient's blood, which is associated with colorectal cancer and malignant tumors of the stomach, and also determines the probability of metastasis of these tumors.

The study was conducted on 185 patients with colon cancer, 190 patients with rectal cancer and 91 patients with stomach cancer. There were 51 people in the control group.

The second work was prepared by Joost Louwagie at the Belgian biotech company OncoMethylome. Blood samples were studied from 193 patients who were operated on for colorectal cancer and 688 people who underwent colonoscopy, in which the presence of SYNE1 and FOXE1 genes, also associated with bowel cancer, was detected.

Colorectal cancer affects every seventeenth person in developed countries. Mortality from this type of tumors largely depends on the time of their detection.

Endoscopic examinations require expensive equipment and highly qualified personnel. In comparison with them, blood tests, which can be taken by a nurse, and studies can be conducted centrally, are much more profitable. In addition, the blood test is much more convenient and safer for the patient.
