Food safety – people's control

Portable food quality tester developed in China

China News based on China Daily (Food tester may help serve up peace of mind – VM).

Scientists at Tianjin University of Science and Technology have developed a portable tester that detects pathogenic bacteria, toxic substances and pesticide residues in food. According to the director of the biotechnology laboratory Wang Sho, the tester, which contains more than 60 strips of indicator paper (for almost every pollutant listed in the state list), gives a result within a few minutes.

Food safety testing usually requires sophisticated laboratory equipment, but using a portable tester is much cheaper and faster, Wang Sho added.

For example, to determine the melamine content in milk, it is enough just to dip the corresponding test paper strip into the milk, and if two strips on the paper turn purple, then the milk contains melamine.

The test in the laboratory today costs about 200 yuan. According to Wang, the portable tester will cost the buyer only 3 yuan. It is assumed that the tester will appear on the market in the near future.
