Global pharmaceutical market: we are waiting for changes!

By 2050, there will be approximately 1.7 billion people over the age of 60 worldwide. This will force a radical change in the global pharmaceutical market. This opinion was expressed on February 19 at a scientific conference by international expert Romeo Payoni (Switzerland).

He explained that the older age of people is characterized by an increase in the number of oncological, cardiovascular diseases, as well as metabolic disorders. Therefore, pharmaceutical companies will have to both increase the production of drugs for the treatment of such diseases and develop new medicines.

According to the expert, the most promising areas that need to be developed at least by 2020 are the development of drugs for xenotransplantation, as well as in the field of gene and stem therapy. Xenotransplantation, that is, the transplantation of a donor organ to a patient, has the main problem – the frequent rejection of a foreign organ. "As transplantation is becoming more and more developed in the world of surgery, it is necessary to develop new, more effective drugs right now," Romeo Paioni stressed. As for stem and gene therapy, here the world science "is only at the beginning of the path, their further development will help to effectively treat such serious diseases as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and other serious ailments," the expert is sure.
